VIC KOVACIC

On December 21, Vic Kovacic drove out to the West Side on his lunch hour. He planned to eat at Aldo’s, a new Italian restaurant in Brooklyn that was midway between the two clusters of rape locations on the big Cleveland area map on his office wall. For the past three weeks, he had driven through scores of shopping centers and apartment buildings looking for the dark 1975 or 1976 Monte Carlo. Today he just wanted a good meal and a chance to do some Christmas shopping.

The tiny parking lot at Aldo’s was full, so he pulled into the parking lot in front of the Floridian next door and looked for an opening. Suddenly he saw it—a beat-up maroon Monte Carlo. His pulse quickened. He got out and looked at the right rear fender. It was rusted, similar to the one in the bank surveillance photo. Unbelievable. He sketched its broken outline on the back of an envelope, noted the car’s license number, and headed to his office to compare.

His crude sketch matched the blurry bank photo. This was the car! Vic wanted to shout, We’ve got it, we’ve got it! But first, who owned it? A computer check showed it to be registered to a man named Ronnie Shelton. His driver’s license records showed him to be five-foot-eight, 138 pounds, twenty-seven years old. So far, it matched the description of the West Side Rapist. Kovacic ran Shelton’s name through the criminal records computer. Up popped several previous arrests, including one for voyeurism. “Bingo,” Vic said.

An SIU detective quickly located a fingerprint card for Ronnie from a 1985 arrest in Cleveland for theft. Ronnie’s prints were compared to those recovered from the Cleveland rape scenes. In minutes, the detective found a match.

Kovacic was exhilarated. “Yes, we are going to get this creep off the street by the holidays.” He called Sex Crimes and broke the news.

“We have definitely identified the West Side Rapist as Ronnie Shelton,” he said. “Now all we have to do is find him.”
